Sports Fields

Marie Grolich Park is a small community park on the banks of the Fox River located in Elgin Illinois. It boasts several practice fields, a sand volleyball court, a medium sized picnic shelter and a kids playground. The park also has a paved walking path and a five-station fitness area.

The best part about the park is that it’s free to use, and it’s open year-round. The Parks and Recreation Department has an active calendar of events to keep you busy and entertained all summer long. Some of the most popular ones include swim lessons, martial arts, boxing, dance and fitness. Other fun activities include day camps and ceramics. The city is currently working to improve more than a dozen neighborhood parks, using U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant money to pay for the upgrades. Among the projects being discussed are renovations at Douglas Park, Woodview Park and Trillium Park as well as new attractions at Wing Street Park and St. Francis Park on the northeast side of town.

The playground at Marie Grolich Park, located on the city’s near southwest side along Souster Avenue between Ryerson Avenue and Willis Street and bordering Route 20 to its south, recently received a makeover. New amenities include a smartphone interactive playground, renovated picnic shelter and sand volleyball court and added bags games, paved walking path and a five-station fitness area.

The improvements were made with Community Development Block Grant money, said Randy Reopelle, Elgin’s parks and recreation director. The city is also using CDBG money to renovate Wing Street Park, off Wing Street just west of State Street, and Trillium Park, on Illinois Avenue just north of Villa Street.

Reopelle says the city plans to create a Woodview Park on a vacant lot just east of the Eastside Recreation Center off Route 19 and install a playground. He also hopes to build a paved path at Trillium and add an entryway into the park as well as some play features and interpretive signage.

Volleyball Court
